Vice President of the Senate, Senator Rawdon Turner, delivered an emotional tribute yesterday, mourning the untimely death of St. Peter MP Asot Michael.
Turner described Michael as a political mentor, a friend, and a tireless representative of his constituents, emphasizing the profound loss felt by the nation.
During his address, Turner reflected on an early encounter as a young bellhop at the Pineapple Hotel, where he witnessed political opponents sharing a meal despite their public clashes. He noted how this experience, and his relationship with Michael, taught him the value of humanity beyond political divides.
Turner shared a poignant memory of Michael at a funeral following a heated election. Despite their differences during the campaign, Michael approached him with warmth and reconciliation. “Politics is over now,” Michael had said. “You’re my blood brother, and I taught you better than this. Let’s move on.”
Turner praised Michael’s dedication to the people of St. Peter, calling him one of the most prepared and committed politicians in the region. “Whether you agreed with him or not, he always put his people first,” Turner said. He extended condolences to Michael’s family, including his son Nigel, his siblings Teresa and Soraya, and the people of St. Peter.
Michael’s death has sent shockwaves through Antigua and Barbuda. The 54-year-old was found with multiple stab wounds at his seaside residence on November 5, 2024. The incident, ruled a homicide, marks a tragic first for the nation, as no sitting parliamentarian has been murdered in its history.
Alexta Francis, 26, has been charged with Michael’s murder. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, which has drawn international attention.
The government has announced an official funeral to honor Michael’s years of public service.
Michael was widely known for his passionate advocacy and his ability to navigate political complexities with resolve. His loss leaves a significant void in Antigua and Barbuda’s political landscape.
